Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin your body needs for healthy hair, skin, and nails, and for converting food into energy. The 5000 mcg dose is well above what you'd get from food alone.

The capsule also contains vegetable cellulose, gelatin, and vegetable magnesium stearate as inactive ingredients.

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: hair and nail health, supports metabolism.
  • We looked for evidence on: Biotin deficiency, Brittle nails, Hair loss, Hair thinning, Skin health.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Likely Effective" for Biotin deficiency (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Brittle nails.

Biotin is likely effective for treating biotin deficiency — a real but uncommon shortfall that can happen with certain medical conditions or medications. For other uses, the evidence is less clear.

It's rated possibly ineffective for multiple sclerosis and seborrheic dermatitis (a scaly skin condition), and we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate it for alopecia areata (patchy hair loss). Many people take high-dose biotin hoping it'll strengthen hair or nails, but the data we hold doesn't establish that it works for those purposes in people without a deficiency.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because your body simply excretes what it doesn't use through the urine. High-dose biotin has rarely been linked to mild diarrhea — two patients taking 300 mg daily reported transient mild diarrhea.

One isolated case report described a woman who developed a rare inflammatory condition after taking biotin 10 mg with other supplements for two months, but it's unclear whether biotin was the cause, and no similar cases have been reported since. The safety data advises checking with your doctor before taking high-dose biotin products, even though normal dietary and supplement amounts are considered appropriate.

Mega Biotin 5000 mcg by Wonder Laboratories: Common Questions

Does Mega Biotin 5000 mcg by Wonder Laboratories interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Mega Biotin 5000 mcg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Mega Biotin 5000 mcg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is it safe to take this while I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
Biotin is rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation. Normal dietary and supplement amounts are appropriate, but the safety notes recommend checking with your doctor before taking high-dose products, so a conversation with them would be wise to make sure this dose is right for you.
Will this actually help my hair grow or get thicker?
We don't have reliable evidence to say biotin helps hair loss or growth in people without a biotin deficiency. If you're looking to strengthen your hair or nails, talk with your pharmacist about whether the data supports trying it for your specific situation.
What's the difference between biotin and other B vitamins?
Biotin is one of the B vitamins — specifically, it helps your body convert food into energy and supports the health of hair, skin, and nails. This product is biotin alone; other B-complex vitamins have different roles and come from different sources.
Can I take this every day long-term?
Biotin is generally well tolerated even at high doses because excess leaves your body in the urine. That said, the safety notes recommend discussing high-dose products with your doctor first, so a quick check-in about long-term use would be a good idea.
What are the inactive ingredients in this capsule?
The capsule contains vegetable cellulose, gelatin, and vegetable magnesium stearate — all common excipients that help hold the product together. If you have allergies or preferences around any of these, let your pharmacist know.
