What’s inside

Full disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Full

Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: biotin (5000 mcg per capsule). Biotin is a B vitamin that your body uses to process carbohydrates, fats, and amino acids.

The capsules also contain inactive ingredients — cellulose, gelatin, and magnesium stearate — which are common binders and fillers.

Does it work?

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Support energy production and metabolism.
  • We looked for evidence on: Biotin deficiency, Hair health, Nail strength, Skin health.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Likely Effective" for Biotin deficiency (Natural Medicines).

Biotin is likely effective for treating biotin deficiency, a real (though uncommon) shortage of this B vitamin in your body. For other uses — hair loss (alopecia areata), multiple sclerosis, and seborrheic dermatitis (a flaky scalp condition) — the evidence either falls short or suggests it may not help.

We don't have reliable evidence that biotin works for hair loss or MS, and it's rated possibly ineffective for seborrheic dermatitis.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because your body excretes excess biotin in the urine. High-dose biotin has rarely been linked to mild diarrhea — a small number of trial participants reported this effect.

One case report described a patient on high-dose biotin alongside other supplements who developed a rare chest and heart lining inflammation, but whether biotin was responsible remains unclear and no similar cases have been reported since. The safety data advises checking with your doctor before taking high-dose biotin supplements, though normal dietary amounts and prenatal vitamin levels are considered appropriate.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.

If you have a biotin deficiency, this supplement can help. If you're hoping it'll grow back hair or clear up a skin condition, the evidence doesn't support those uses.

Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting high-dose biotin, especially if you have any ongoing health concerns.

Mega Biotin 5000 mcg by Wonder Laboratories: Common Questions

Does Mega Biotin 5000 mcg by Wonder Laboratories interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Mega Biotin 5000 mcg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Mega Biotin 5000 mcg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is biotin used for?
Biotin is a B vitamin your body needs to break down carbs, fats, and amino acids. It's likely effective if you have a biotin deficiency. For hair loss, scalp conditions, or MS, the evidence doesn't support its use.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
Yes. Biotin is rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation. Normal dietary amounts and prenatal vitamins containing biotin are appropriate — just check with your doctor before adding a high-dose supplement on top of what you're already taking.
What are the side effects of biotin?
Biotin is generally well tolerated. High-dose biotin has rarely caused mild diarrhea. One isolated case report linked it to chest and heart lining inflammation, but no similar cases have been reported since, and it's unclear whether biotin was the cause.
Why does your data say biotin may not work for hair loss?
We don't have reliable evidence that biotin helps alopecia areata (patchy hair loss), so it's rated insufficient evidence. For seborrheic dermatitis and MS, the evidence suggests it may not help — that's why it's rated possibly ineffective.
Is this safe to take long-term?
Biotin is generally well tolerated at high doses because excess is excreted in your urine. Still, discuss long-term high-dose use with your doctor first, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.
