Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 2 of its 2 active ingredients.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Helps the digestion of lactose.
  • We looked for evidence on: Lactose intolerance, Gas and bloating, Digestive discomfort, Dairy-related digestive issues.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lactase is rated "Effective" for Lactose intolerance (Natural Medicines).

Lactase is effective for lactose intolerance — the trouble digesting dairy that causes bloating, gas, or cramping. We don't have enough evidence to rate whether it helps with colic in infants or prematurity.

If you're taking it for lactose intolerance, the research supports its use.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lactase is generally well tolerated when used as directed. A rare case of contact dermatitis and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis has been reported in a worker exposed to powdered lactase, suggesting allergy is possible but very uncommon.

Because lactase acts only in the gut, the risk to you is low — but talk with your doctor or pharmacist before regular use during pregnancy, and let them know first if you have any history of allergies to enzymes or dairy-related sensitivities. We don't have safety data on file for rennet.

Dairy Digestant by GNC Natural Brand: Common Questions

Does Dairy Digestant by GNC Natural Brand interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Dairy Digestant. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Dairy Digestant contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this help my lactose intolerance?
Yes — lactase is effective for lactose intolerance. It breaks down lactose so your body can digest dairy without bloating or cramping.
Is lactase safe to use every day?
Lactase is generally well tolerated when used as directed. If you plan to use it regularly, especially during pregnancy, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Can I take this if I'm allergic to dairy?
Lactase is an enzyme, not milk itself, so a dairy allergy shouldn't be a problem — but a rare allergy to lactase itself has been reported. If you've had any enzyme allergies before, mention that to your pharmacist.
What's rennet?
Rennet is the other active ingredient in this product. We don't have detailed effectiveness data on file for it in this combination, but it's traditionally used in dairy digestion products.
Does this have any fillers?
The tablet contains dicalcium phosphate as an inactive ingredient, which is a common binder used to hold the tablet together.
