MSM 500 mg Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking MSM 500 mg against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: sulfur, a mineral that's been used traditionally in topical formulations. The capsule also includes gelatin, silica, and magnesium stearate as inactive ingredients — these are fillers and binders that help form and stabilize the capsule.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence supporting sulfur is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for scabies and dandruff — meaning there's some evidence behind it, though not conclusive.
For acne, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and the common cold, the evidence we hold isn't reliable enough to rate it one way or the other. You should know most of the research on sulfur focuses on topical (skin) use rather than oral supplements like this one.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Topical sulfur is generally well tolerated, though it can cause skin dryness, irritation, and itching. Oral sulfur is less studied, and the facts note it can cause diarrhea.
There's one case report of a woman who took a very large amount of sulfur powder (250 grams over 6 days) and developed a serious acid buildup in her blood (metabolic acidosis), though she had underlying diabetes and kidney problems that likely contributed. During pregnancy and lactation, sulfur is rated possibly safe, but the data is limited — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
No known interactions
No interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.
Puritan's Pride MSM 500 mg may be worth considering if you're interested in sulfur for scabies or dandruff, though the evidence is stronger for topical forms. If you're taking it for other uses, the science isn't established yet.
Because oral sulfur is less researched than topical sulfur, and diarrhea or other side effects are possible, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — especially if you have kidney disease or diabetes.
