Lipase, lactase, and the protease enzymes are generally well tolerated in adults when used as directed. One rare allergic reaction to powdered lactase has been reported in an occupational setting.

The protease enzymes—acid protease, alkaline protease, and the protease/peptidase complex—can occasionally cause digestive upset or allergic reactions, and there are rare case reports of allergic rhinitis or asthma from airborne occupational exposure to pepsin.
