Beta-alanine is possibly effective for athletic performance and physical performance based on the evidence we hold. For age-related cognitive decline, cognitive function, menopausal symptoms, and COPD, the evidence isn't established—there's either not enough research or it's too inconsistent to rate.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Beta-alanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, but it does have one very common side effect: a harmless tingling or pins-and-needles feeling (paresthesia) along with skin flushing. This usually starts on the scalp within 20 minutes of taking a dose, spreads across your body, and lasts about an hour.
How strong it is depends on how much you take—higher doses cause more tingling than lower ones. Long-term safety at high doses hasn't been studied.
There isn't enough safety information to know whether it's okay during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so those are times to avoid it and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist.
