Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product is pure vitamin B7, also called biotin — a B-complex vitamin your body needs to turn food into energy and keep your hair, skin, and nails healthy. It's a single-ingredient powder with no fillers listed.

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Biotin's overall clinical evidence instead.

Strong

Strong clinical evidence supports Biotin for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Biotin deficiency — rated "Likely Effective" (Natural Medicines).

Biotin is likely effective for biotin deficiency, which is rare but can happen in certain medical conditions or with some medications. For multiple sclerosis and seborrheic dermatitis (a scaly skin condition), the evidence suggests biotin probably doesn't help.

For hair loss (alopecia areata), we don't have enough reliable evidence to know either way.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated at most doses because your body gets rid of extra biotin through your urine. High-dose biotin has rarely been linked to mild diarrhea.

One unusual case reported a serious inflammation in the chest lining after someone took biotin along with another supplement and an existing heart medication, but that case is extremely rare and it's unclear what actually caused it. Normal dietary amounts and typical supplement doses are considered likely safe during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, but if you're thinking about high-dose biotin, talk it over with your doctor first.

No known interactions

No known interactions

No medication interactions are currently documented for the matched ingredients — that isn't a guarantee none exist.

Why this rating?
  • None of the 1 matched ingredient has a documented medication interaction on file.

No interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check. Still, run your medications through the search tool on this page and clear it with your own doctor or pharmacist before you start.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.

If you have a diagnosed biotin deficiency, this can help. If you're taking it for hair, skin, or nails without a deficiency, the evidence doesn't support it working for those purposes.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, but check with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking high doses.

How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Pure Biotin (Vitamin B7) contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.

Biotin is rated likely safe during pregnancy and lactation. Normal dietary amounts and typical supplement doses are fine, but if you're considering high-dose biotin, talk with your doctor first to make sure it's right for you.
Can biotin help with hair loss?
For hair loss (alopecia areata), we don't have enough reliable evidence in our data to say whether biotin works. You'd want to discuss this with your doctor if that's why you're considering it.
What are the side effects of biotin?
High-dose biotin has rarely caused mild diarrhea. One very unusual case reported a serious chest inflammation after taking biotin with other supplements and medications, but that's extremely rare and it's unclear what caused it. Most people tolerate biotin well.
Is this product a powder or a capsule?
This is a powder form of biotin, so you can mix it into a drink or food.
Will biotin help my nails or skin?
