Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: sour cherry. The capsule itself also contains inactive ingredients — hypromellose, magnesium stearate, cellulose, and silica — which are fillers and binders that help hold the supplement together.

Not established
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Sour Cherry's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: antioxidant support and free radical neutralization.
  • We looked for evidence on: Exercise-induced muscle soreness, Gout, Osteoarthritis, Aromatase inhibitor-induced arthralgia, General antioxidant support, Joint health — and 1 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Sour Cherry is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Exercise-induced muscle soreness (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Sour Cherry is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Osteoarthritis, Gout, Aromatase inhibitor-induced arthralgia.

The evidence on sour cherry is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for athletic performance.

For everything else on the label — ADHD, cognitive function, muscle soreness after exercise, respiratory infections after exercise, and fibromyalgia — there isn't enough reliable evidence in our data to say whether it works. That doesn't mean it doesn't; it means the studies aren't strong enough yet to make a call.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data

  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Sour cherry is generally well tolerated when you eat it as whole fruit or juice. As a concentrated supplement in capsule form, though, it's less studied, so we'd caution you to watch how your body responds.

The most common side effects reported are abdominal pain, loose stools, and general gastrointestinal upset. A small number of people in trials reported these symptoms — about 29% of children in one study taking the juice concentrate twice daily for two weeks had abdominal pain.

One person had a possible allergic skin reaction after drinking a tart cherry and apple juice blend. If you have a known cherry allergy, talk to us before you start.

How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Tart Cherry Ultra Capsules contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
