What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: certified organic Vana Holy Basil leaf liquid extract. The extract is delivered in a menstruum, which is the liquid base used to concentrate the herb's compounds.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The effectiveness of holy basil for its commonly cited uses hasn't been reliably established in the data we hold. The evidence is insufficient to rate it for generalized anxiety disorder, asthma, headache, respiratory tract infections, dental plaque, or diabetes.
If you're considering it for one of these reasons, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the current evidence actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Holy basil extract is generally well tolerated short-term in adults, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects from oral use are loose stools and nausea — a small number of trial participants experienced these.
If applied as a mouthwash, a bitter taste has been reported. Do not use this product if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Animal data raise safety concerns during pregnancy, and there isn't enough reliable safety information to recommend it while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're in either situation and considering holy basil.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start Vana Holy Basil, check your medications against these types: blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (Moderate risk of bleeding), diabetes medications (Moderate risk of low blood sugar), and pentobarbital (Moderate risk of increased sedation). If you take any of these, talk to your pharmacist.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or pentobarbital, you need to check with your pharmacist before using this product. Holy basil is generally well tolerated short-term, but long-term safety data are sparse.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? Skip this one — the safety data don't support its use.

Vana Holy Basil by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Vana Holy Basil by Herbal Terra contains one active ingredient — holy basil leaf extract — which does interact with medications.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin). Animal research suggests holy basil seed oil may increase bleeding risk, though we don't have proof this happens in humans yet.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
There are two additional Moderate-severity interactions to watch for. Holy basil may increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if you're taking diabetes medications — small clinical studies show it can lower fasting blood glucose.
It also theoretically increases the sedative effects of pentobarbital, though again this is based on animal data and hasn't been confirmed in people.
Altogether, these interactions span 211 individual medications. We've checked the one active ingredient in this product; before you start, run your exact medications through the search tool on this page.
