What’s inside
Full disclosure
Vana Holy Basil is a single-ingredient liquid extract made from certified organic Vana Holy Basil dried leaf. The only other component listed is menstruum, which is the liquid used in extracting the plant material—an inactive ingredient.
This product has 1 active ingredient.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold for holy basil does not establish that it works for any of its common uses. For generalized anxiety disorder, asthma, headache, respiratory tract infections, dental plaque, and diabetes, the data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate effectiveness.
If you're considering this product for a specific health goal, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist to explore what the current evidence actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Holy basil extract is generally well tolerated in the short term, but high-quality long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects are loose stools and nausea when taken by mouth.
One clinical study found that 2 out of 24 participants experienced nausea or loose stools. During pregnancy, the safety data advises against use—animal data raise concerns and human safety is not established.
While breastfeeding, there isn't enough reliable safety information, so avoid it. If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Vana Holy Basil, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (such as warfarin or aspirin)—there's a Moderate risk of increased bleeding. Also double-check if you take diabetes medications—holy basil may lower blood sugar further.
If you use pentobarbital or other sedatives, confirm it's okay first, as holy basil may boost sedative effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Holy basil may be worth a conversation if you're interested in traditional herbal support, but the evidence for its effectiveness isn't established in our data. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or sedatives like pentobarbital, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this—the interaction risks are real.

Vana Holy Basil by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Vana Holy Basil by Herbal Terra does interact with medications.
Through its holy basil content, it can affect anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners), antidiabetes drugs, and pentobarbital—a sedative barbiturate. The most serious documented concern is a Moderate-severity interaction with blood thinners and antiplatelet medications: holy basil seed oil may increase bleeding risk, though animal research shows this effect on bleeding time, it's not yet confirmed in humans.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Holy basil may also increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when taken with diabetes medications. Small clinical studies show it can lower fasting blood glucose levels, so combining it with antidiabetes drugs requires careful monitoring.
Additionally, there's a Moderate-severity theoretical interaction with pentobarbital (a sedative): holy basil seed oil may strengthen its sedative effects in animals, but whether this happens in people or with other sedatives remains unclear.
Altogether, these interactions span 212 individual medications. Use the interaction checker on this page to verify your exact medications before starting this product.
