What’s inside
Full disclosure
Via Dulce Grapefruit Flavored is a powder with one active ingredient: gymnema leaf extract. The rest of the powder is made up of inactive ingredients — lactitol, fructose, polydextrose, maltodextrin, gum arabic, natural and artificial flavors, oat bran, apple fiber powder, silicon dioxide, citric acid, rice bran, acesulfame potassium, color, and chromium polynicotinate.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for gymnema leaf extract isn't established in the data we hold. Studies haven't provided reliable evidence to rate it for diabetes, obesity, prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), or metabolic syndrome.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means we don't have solid human trial data backing its use for these conditions yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gymnema is generally well tolerated in the short term, though quality varies between products. The biggest safety concern is that it lowers blood sugar, which matters if you're on diabetes medication or have blood sugar concerns.
Rare cases of liver inflammation (hepatitis) have been reported — one person who drank gymnema tea three times daily for 10 days developed weakness, fatigue, jaundice, and elevated liver enzymes, though they recovered after six months with treatment. Because there isn't enough safety data, gymnema is best avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take Via Dulce Grapefruit Flavored, check any antidiabetes medications you're on — gymnema can lower blood sugar and make diabetes drugs stronger, raising the risk of low blood sugar (Moderate severity). Also double-check CYP1A2 substrates, CYP2C9 substrates, and CYP3A4 substrates — drugs processed by these liver enzymes may have higher levels in your bloodstream (Moderate to Minor severity).
Use the search tool on this page to verify your exact medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you take diabetes medications or any prescription drugs metabolized by your liver, you need to check your specific medications with us before using it.
If you have liver concerns or experience weakness, fatigue, or yellowing of the skin or eyes while taking it, stop and contact your doctor.

Via Dulce Grapefruit Flavored by Omnilife Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Via Dulce Grapefruit Flavored by Omnilife contains gymnema leaf extract, which interacts with a number of medications.
The most serious concern is with antidiabetes drugs — gymnema can lower blood sugar on its own, and when combined with diabetes medications it may increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). If you take any diabetes medication, you'll want to check with us before starting this product.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Gymnema also affects how your liver processes certain drugs. It can inhibit a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which may raise levels of medications broken down that way.
It can both speed up and slow down another enzyme, CYP2C9, depending on the drug — some medications may become less effective, others may build up. There's also a minor interaction with drugs processed by CYP3A4, where gymnema may increase their levels.
Two specific drugs warrant mention: phenacetin levels may rise if combined with gymnema, and tolbutamide (a diabetes medication) may be cleared faster, making it less effective.
Altogether, these interactions span 840 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs before you take this product.

For each ingredient in Via Dulce Grapefruit Flavored with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Gymnema leaf extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking gymnema with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Gymnema reduces blood glucose levels in some human and animal research. In human studies, it has been shown to enhance the blood glucose lowering effects of hypoglycemic drugs. However, other research in adults with prediabetes or metabolic syndrome suggests that gymnema does not reduce fasting levels of blood glucose. Until more is known, monitor blood glucose levels closely.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, gymnema might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Animal and in vitro research shows that gymnema can inhibit the CYP1A2 enzyme. In one animal study, oral administration of gymnema for 7 days increased the plasma concentrations of phenacetin, a CYP1A2 substrate, by about 1.4-fold and reduced the clearance of phenacetin by about 29%.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, gymnema might increase or decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
Animal research shows that gymnema can induce the CYP2C9 enzyme. In one animal study, gymnema caused a 2.4-fold increase in the clearance of tolbutamide, a CYP2C9 substrate, in rats. In vitro research also shows that gymnema can inhibit CYP2C9.
Phenacetin
Theoretically, taking gymnema with phenacetin might increase the levels of phenacetin.
Animal research shows that gymnema, administered orally for 7 days, decreases the clearance of phenacetin in a dose-dependent manner by about 21% to 29% and increases plasma levels about 1.3- to 1.4-fold when compared to control.
Tolbutamide (Orinase)
Theoretically, taking gymnema with tolbutamide might the decrease levels of tolbutamide.
Animal research shows that gymnema, administered orally for 7 days, increases the clearance of tolbutamide by 2.4-fold when compared to control.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, gymnema might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
One in vitro study using rat liver microsomes shows that gymnema can modestly inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. However, other in vitro research using human liver microsomes shows that gymnema does not affect CYP3A4 activity. Animal research also shows that gymnema does not alter the function of CYP3A4. In one study in rats, oral administration of gymnema for 7 days did not alter the clearance of amlodipine, a CYP3A4 substrate.
