The most serious concern is anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction), which has been reported in both adults and children who consumed perilla seeds — research suggests a compound called oleosin may be responsible.
There's also one report of occupational asthma from breathing smoke from roasted perilla seeds. Topically, dermatitis has been reported.
