How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Perilla is generally well tolerated when used as food, but supplement-strength products haven't been studied extensively. The most common side effect from topical use is dermatitis (skin irritation).
Rarely, people who've consumed perilla seeds have reported anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction), and some evidence points to a compound called oleosin as a possible culprit. There's also a rare report of occupational asthma from inhaling smoke from roasted perilla seeds.
The safety data advises against medicinal amounts during pregnancy and while breastfeeding — there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe at those times.
