The main concern is a rare but serious allergic reaction called anaphylaxis, which has been reported in both adults and children who consumed perilla seeds — some research points to a component called oleosin as the trigger.
Topically, dermatitis (skin irritation) is the most common side effect reported. Because safety data during pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited, the guidance is to avoid medicinal amounts of perilla in both cases.
