Clinical
Stool softeners are used on a short-term basis to relieve constipation by people who should avoid straining during bowel movements because of heart conditions, hemorrhoids, and other problems. They work by softening stools to make them easier to pass.
Read the full MedlinePlus article ↗This is an over-the-counter oral capsule containing docusate sodium, a stool softener. Docusate sodium is typically used to soften stool and make bowel movements easier to pass. It works by helping water and fats mix into stool rather than triggering muscle contractions in the intestines. This product is marketed under the FDA's OTC monograph rules for stool softeners.
