Can You Give Zarbee's And Hyland's Cough Medicine Together?
In our latest question and answer, the pharmacist discusses if Zarbee's and Hyland's cough medicine can be taken at the same time.

Question
My son has a bit of a cold and I am trying to decide between giving Zarbee's cough syrup or Hyland's. I've heard there aren't actual drugs in these, so would it be okay to just give them together? Specifically, I am asking about Zarbee's Cough + Mucus and Hyland's Cold and Cough.

Key points
- There is no known interaction between Zarbee's Cough + Mucus and Hyland's Cold & Cold but there is a lack of data available evaluating their combined use.
- Based on the ingredients in each, we wouldn't expect a clinically significant interaction.
- It may be prudent to try one product or the other and see which provides the best benefit to avoid combining medicines.
Answer
Based on the ingredients in each product, there is no data to indicate any drug interaction between Zarbee's Cough + Mucus and Hyland's Cold & Cold. These products are different in the sense that Zarbee's contains botanicals and other natural ingredients, while Hyland's is a homeopathic preparation.
I will say, however, that even though there is no reported interaction between these two products, there is a lack of data regarding the combination. We just wouldn't expect an interaction based on the listed ingredients since homeopathic products (like Hyland's) generally have few, if any, interactions.
Zarbee's products likely have very few interactions to be concerned about either.
I would recommend giving one product to your son to start, rather than combining them, and then perhaps trying the other if the first doesn't work. When it comes to medication, if you can avoid combining medications when it isn't medically necessary, that generally is preferable.
What Is In Zarbee's Cough + Mucus?
Zarbee's Cough Syrup + Mucus contains the following ingredients:
- Dark honey
- English Ivy
- Black Elderberry
- Zinc
- Water
- Natural flavor
- Citric acid
As you can see, there are no pharmaceutical ingredients in Zarbee's. It contains a collection of herbal and other natural ingredients.
All of the ingredients have very few potential drug interactions and are generally considered safe to take with most other medications.
What Is In Hyland's Kids Cold And Cough?
Hyland's Kids Cold & Cough contains:
- Allium Cepa 6X HPUS
- Chamomilla 6X HPUS
- Coffea Cruda 6X HPUS
- Hepar Sulph Calc 12X HPUS
- Hydrastis 6X HPUS
- Natrum Muriaticum 6X HPUS
- Phosphorus 12X HPUS
- Pulsatilla 6X HPUS
- Sulphur 12X HPUS
- Citric Acid
- Glycerine
- Glycyrrhiza Extract
- Purified Water
- Sodium Benzoate
Hyland's Kids Cold & Cough is a homeopathic product, which utilizes the principle of 'like cures like'.
In other words, homeopathic products contain very small amounts of ingredients (the 12X and 6X on the label are levels of dilution) that in larger doses, would cause the same symptoms being treated.
For example, we can see that Hyland's Kids Cold & Cough contains 'Allium Cepa', which is another name for an onion. Normally, onions are associated with causing a runny nose, watery eyes etc..., but in this product it is intended to treat those symptoms.
While there is a general lack of evidence for homeopathic products in general, they often don't have any drug interactions to worry about due to the small amounts of ingredients contained in them.
Is There An Interaction?
As mentioned, there is no known interaction between Zarbee's Cough + Mucus and Hyland's Cold & Cold and we generally wouldn't expect one based on the ingredients in these two products.
Having said this, it may be best to just try one product or the other and see if they provide benefit.
