Answer
Mucinex (guaifenesin) is generally considered to be safe to take every day. It is not associated with any type of dependence or addiction. In addition, Mucinex does not have any sort of withdrawal reactions or negative side effects, such as rebound, associated with it if taken for extended periods of time.
Mucinex (Guaifenesin) Information
Mucinex (guaifenesin) is classified as an expectorant and mucolytic, used to thin and loosen mucus secretions as well as relieve chest congestion.
Less viscous mucus secretions help to increase the efficiency of our "mucociliary clearance mechanism", changing a dry, unproductive cough to a more productive one.
Mucinex is generally very well tolerated but can cause the following side effects:
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- GI distress
Mucinex is a bi-layer tablet, with one layer being immediate release and the other slowly releasing medication over 12 hours. This allows the product to be both quick acting and long-lasting.
If you are having year-round allergy symptoms, it may be beneficial to add on an antihistamine, such as Claritin or Allegra for daily use as well. They may reduce allergy symptoms and dry your sinuses.
