Answer
Thank you for your question regarding the potential interaction between famotidine and metronidazole! We appreciate you contacting us.
Famotidine, the generic name for Pepcid (and Pepcid AC, a popular over-the-counter drug), is an H2 receptor blocker that works by reducing stomach acid production.
It's always wise to check for potential interactions when considering new medications, and famotidine is no exception. Because it reduces stomach acid, famotidine can alter the pH of the stomach, and this change may sometimes affect the absorption of certain medications.
For example, drugs such as ketoconazole and itraconazole require an acidic environment for optimal absorption, and their effectiveness may be reduced when taken alongside acid-reducing agents like famotidine.
In the case of metronidazole, however, there is no evidence to suggest a clinically significant interaction with famotidine. Metronidazole's absorption and overall efficacy are not notably affected by changes in gastric pH, making the concurrent use of these medications generally safe.
