- There is no known drug interaction between Mucinex (guaifenesin) and a Z-Pack (azithromycin)
Answer
There is no known drug interaction between azithromycin and Mucinex (guaifenesin). They are considered safe to take together.
In fact, Mucinex can be a great medication choice to help clear up the symptoms you are experiencing (chest congestion, excess mucus etc.,). While azithromycin is a commonly used antibiotic for a number of indications, when it is prescribed as a Z-pack (which contains a 5-day course of azithromycin), it is often for things like bronchitis and sinusitis.
These conditions tend to cause inflammation, chest congestion and excess mucus. Mucinex is a safe choice to use and can help with these symptoms.
Dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant and a drug commonly found in products with guaifenesin (e.g. Mucinex DM, Robitussin DM), is also safe to take with azithromycin.
About Mucinex
Guaifenesin is used to relieve chest congestion. It is in a class of medications called expectorants and works by thinning the mucus in the air passages to make it easier to cough up the mucus and clear the airways.
About Azithromycin
Azithromycin is used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as bronchitis; pneumonia; sexually transmitted diseases (STD); and infections of the ears, lungs, sinuses, skin, throat, and reproductive organs. It is in a class of medications called macrolide antibiotics and works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
