Decreased exposure of diclofenac


Interaction Summary

Concomitant use of diclofenac (a CYP2C9 substrate) with a CYP2C9 inducer may result in decreased exposure of diclofenac and may cause decreased efficacy. Use caution when coadministering diclofenac with a CYP2C9 inducer. Dosage adjustment of diclofenac may be necessary. When a higher diclofenac dose is required while using a combination product containing diclofenac (eg, diclofenac/misoprostol), use separate products .

How To Manage Interaction

The concomitant use of diclofenac (a CYP2C9 substrate) with a CYP2C9 inducer may decrease diclofenac exposure. Use caution when coadministering diclofenac with a CYP2C9 inducer. Dosage adjustment of diclofenac may be necessary. When a higher diclofenac dose is required while using a combination product containing diclofenac (eg, diclofenac/misoprostol), use separate products .

Diclofenac Overview

  • Diclofenac capsules (Zipsor, Zorvolex) and tablets (Cataflam) are used to relieve mild to moderate pain. Diclofenac extended-release tablets (Voltaren XR), tablets (Cataflam), and delayed-release tablets (available generically) are used to relieve pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis (arthritis caused by a breakdown of the lining of the joints), and rheumatoid arthritis (arthritis caused by swelling of the lining of the joints). Diclofenac extended-release tablets and delayed-release tablets are also used to treat ankylosing spondylitis (arthritis that mainly affects the spine). Diclofenac tablets (Cataflam) are also used to treat painful menstrual periods. Diclofenac solution (Cambia) is used to treat migraine headaches in adults, but cannot be used to prevent migraines or to treat other types of headaches. Diclofenac is in a class of medications called NSAIDs. It works by stopping the body's production of a substance that causes pain, fever, and inflammation.

Rifapentine Overview

  • Rifapentine is used with other medications to treat active tuberculosis (TB; a serious infection that affects the lungs and sometimes other parts of the body) in adults and children 12 years of age and older. Rifapentine is also used with isoniazid (Laniazid) to treat adults and children 2 years of age and older with latent (resting or nongrowing) TB, including those in close contact with people who have active TB, a positive tuberculin skin test, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), or those with pulmonary fibrosis (scarring of the lungs with an unknown cause). Rifapentine is in a class of medications called antimycobacterials. It works by killing the bacteria that cause infection.

  • Antibiotics such as rifapentine will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
