Dabigatran etexilate increases the risk of bleeding and can cause significant and, sometimes, fatal bleeding. Risk is further increased with concomitant use of drugs that also increase the risk of bleeding, including anticoagulants. Promptly evaluate any signs or symptoms of blood loss (eg, a drop in hemoglobin and/or hematocrit or hypotension) and discontinue use of dabigatran etexilate in patients with active pathological bleeding. Coadministration may also increase the risk of epidural or spinal hematomas that can result in long-term or permanent paralysis in patients who are receiving neuraxial anesthesia or undergoing spinal puncture21.
