These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
African Wild Potato interacts with whole categories of medication. Losartan Potassium falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with African Wild Potato in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Losartan Potassium
Losartan Potassium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group African Wild Potato interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's a wrinkle worth knowing: losartan is actually a prodrug. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to turn losartan into its more powerful active form, which is the part that does most of the work lowering your blood pressure.
Lab studies suggest African Wild Potato may slow down that same CYP2C9 enzyme. If that happens in real life, your body might convert less losartan into its active form, which could make it less effective at controlling your blood pressure. So instead of more side effects, the bigger worry here is a weaker effect. I want to be honest though, this is only based on test-tube research, not people, so we really don't know how much it matters. If you're thinking about this combo, check in with your doctor or pharmacist and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Losartan Potassium also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's a wrinkle worth knowing about losartan. Your liver actually has to activate losartan, turning it into a stronger form called E-3174 that does most of the blood pressure lowering work. The enzyme CYP3A4 (along with another one called 2C9) handles part of that conversion. African Wild Potato has shown, in test-tube studies only, that it can block CYP3A4. In theory, less activation could mean a slightly weaker blood pressure effect.
The good news: this is lab-dish evidence, not human results, and in an actual human study the plant didn't change the levels of another CYP3A4 drug. So real-world impact is uncertain and likely small. Still, if you take this supplement, mention it to your pharmacist and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings rather than guessing.

About African Wild Potato
What is African Wild Potato?
- Immune support
- Prostate and urinary symptoms
- Inflammation
- General tonic/wellness
- Skin conditions
African Wild Potato (Hypoxis hemerocallidea) is a southern African plant traditionally used as a tonic and for immune, prostate, and inflammatory complaints. Human evidence for these uses is very limited, and safety—especially during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or with serious illness—is not well established. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it.
About Losartan
What Is Losartan Used For?
Brand name: Cozaar
Losartan treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Keeping blood pressure under control lowers the risk of serious events like stroke and heart attack.
It is also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people who have high blood pressure and left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged heart muscle). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients. Additionally, losartan treats diabetic nephropathy — kidney damage caused by type 2 diabetes — in people who also have high blood pressure.
