Peginterferon alfa-2a, Ribavirin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's the good news first: peginterferon alfa-2a (Pegasys) is an injection, not a pill. Since agar's gel only works on things passing through your stomach and intestines, it really can't reach a medicine you inject under your skin. So for the interferon part of your treatment, agar isn't a concern.

The ribavirin tablet is the one to think about. Because agar swells into a thick gel in your gut, it could theoretically slow or reduce how much of an oral drug like ribavirin gets absorbed. This idea comes only from animal feeding studies, so it's weak, theoretical evidence, not something proven in people. Still, to play it safe, don't take agar at the same time as your ribavirin dose. Space them apart and ask your pharmacist about the best timing.

About Peginterferon Alfa-2a Injection

What Is Peginterferon Alfa-2a Injection Used For?

Brand names: Pegasys, Pegetron

Pegasys is used to treat chronic hepatitis C (CHC) in adults with compensated (stable) liver disease, typically in combination with other hepatitis C antiviral drugs. It is also approved for children 5 years and older with CHC in combination with ribavirin. Pegasys monotherapy (alone) is only an option when other HCV drugs cannot be used due to contraindications or serious intolerance.

Pegasys is also used to treat chronic hepatitis B (CHB) — both HBeAg-positive and HBeAg-negative types — in adults with compensated liver disease and evidence of active viral replication and liver inflammation. For children, Pegasys is approved for HBeAg-positive CHB in non-cirrhotic patients 3 years of age and older.
