ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate
Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: agar is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your gut. The concern is that this gel could trap some of your tenofovir DF (Viread) as it passes through, so a little less of the medicine gets absorbed into your bloodstream. With an HIV or hepatitis B medicine, you really want steady, full absorption so the virus stays suppressed and doesn't get a chance to develop resistance.
I'll be honest with you though: this is theoretical. It's based on pharmacology and animal studies using diets that were 5 to 10 percent agar, not real proof in people taking Viread. Occasional culinary amounts (like agar in a dessert) are very unlikely to matter. If you're using agar as a daily fiber supplement, just separate it from your dose by a couple of hours and check with your pharmacist first.

About Agar
What is Agar?
- Constipation
- Weight loss
- Vegetarian gelatin substitute
- Source of dietary fiber
- Appetite control
Agar is a plant-based gel made from red seaweed that is widely used as a vegetarian alternative to gelatin and as a source of dietary fiber. It is generally considered safe as a food, but you should drink plenty of water with it and check with your pharmacist before using it as a supplement.
About Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/Tenofovir alafenamide
What Is Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/Tenofovir alafenamide Used For?
Brand name: Viread
-
Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (DF) (Viread) is used along with other medications to treat HIV infection in adults and children 2 years of age and older weighing 22 pounds (10 kilograms) or more. Tenofovir DF is also used to treat chronic (long term) HBV in adults and children 2 years of age and older weighing 22 pounds (10 kilograms) or more. Tenofovir alafenamide (AF) (Vemlidy) is used to treat chronic (long term) HBV in adults and children 12 years of age and older who have stable liver disease. Tenofovir is in a class of medications called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). It works by decreasing the amount of HIV and HBV in the blood. Although tenofovir will not cure HIV, it may decrease your chance of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related illnesses such as serious infections or cancer. Taking these medications along with practicing safer sex and making other lifestyle changes may decrease the risk of transmitting the HIV virus to other people. Tenofovir will not cure hepatitis B and may not prevent complications of chronic hepatitis B such as cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer. Tenofovir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis B to other people.
