Black Alder and Tasimelteon

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Tasimelteon and Black Alder in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Tasimelteon

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Tasimelteon is filed under 5 classifications — including cytochrome p450 1a2 (cyp1a2) substrates, cytochrome p450 1a2 (cyp1a2) substrates, cns depressants. Black Alder has documented interactions with 2 drug classes — the most serious being cisplatin (platinol-aq) (moderate) and doxorubicin (adriamycin, others) (moderate) — and none of Tasimelteon’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What Tasimelteon’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves Black Alder. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Tasimelteon’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you take both. 2 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Liver problems Worth acting on
  • A higher chance of infection Worth acting on
  • Vivid dreams or nightmares mentioned in 8.5% of FDA reports for Tasimelteon
  • Trouble sleeping mentioned in 19.8% of FDA reports for Tasimelteon

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Tasimelteon. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 5,765 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Tasimelteon that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Black Alder’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Black Alder side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Black Alder has no side effects.

How to take them

Some Tasimelteon Products Have a Food Rule — Black Alder Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Tasimelteon says to take it on an empty stomach. Most supplements — Black Alder included — are taken with a meal, so the easy mistake is swallowing both together at breakfast. Where that rule applies, keep Tasimelteon on its own and move Black Alder to a meal later in the day.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Tasimelteon products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. The label we read is quoted below — check the directions on your own box or bottle, or ask your pharmacist, for how to take the exact product you were given.

A food rule is not an interaction — it is about how much of the medicine you absorb. The directions that came with your own product, and your pharmacist, outrank anything on this page.

About Black Alder

What is Black Alder?

Black Alder
  • Sore throat and mouth inflammation
  • Skin wounds and irritation (topical)
  • Fever and general aches (traditional)
  • Digestive complaints
  • Astringent for minor bleeding

Black Alder is a European tree whose bark and leaves have a long history in folk medicine, mainly as an astringent gargle or wound wash. There is very little modern human research to confirm any of these uses, and it can cause stomach upset, so it should be used cautiously and avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Alnus glutinosa · Betulaceae · Bark, leaves, and sometimes the catkins · Dried bark or leaf for tea, decoctions, tinctures, and gargles or mouth rinses

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Black Alder is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Black Alder record says about it on its own.

Black Alder: dosing

There is no established, standardized dose for Black Alder. Traditional use involved making a tea or decoction from the dried bark or leaves, or using a diluted preparation as a gargle or skin wash.If you choose to use a product, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed the recommended amount.
