Bovine Cartilage and Primaquine Phosphate

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Primaquine Phosphate and Bovine Cartilage in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Bovine Cartilage at all — not against Primaquine Phosphate, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Everything above comes from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record for Bovine Cartilage — expand a row for the licensed statement it rests on. We read the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Primaquine Phosphate’s FDA label too, and the two lists don’t meaningfully overlap — which is why no Primaquine Phosphate column appears here.

This page covers Bovine Cartilage only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Primaquine Phosphate page lists 18 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Coffee Charcoal (moderate), European Mandrake (moderate), Glucomannan (moderate) and Grapefruit (moderate).

By severity: 1 major · 8 moderate · 9 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Primaquine Phosphate page

“Activated charcoal, the only major-rated interaction among the 18 on file, can bind primaquine phosphate (Primaquine) in the gut and shrink how much of each dose your body actually absorbs. That matters more than usual, because this antimalarial exists to wipe out the malaria parasites hiding in the liver, and an under-absorbed course…”

About Bovine Cartilage

What is Bovine Cartilage?

  • Osteoarthritis and joint pain
  • Cancer support (unproven)
  • Wound healing
  • Inflammation
  • Skin conditions like psoriasis

Bovine cartilage is an animal-derived supplement that some people use for joint health, inflammation, and as an unproven cancer aid. The scientific evidence supporting these uses is weak and largely outdated, and quality human studies are lacking. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a serious medical condition.

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Bovine Cartilage is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Bovine Cartilage record says about it on its own.

Bovine Cartilage: dosing

There is no well-established standard dose for bovine cartilage. Products differ widely in their strength and form, and reliable dosing guidelines from clinical studies are lacking. If you choose to use it, follow the directions on the product label and do not exceed the recommended amount.

About Primaquine

What Is Primaquine Used For?

Brand name: Primaquine

Primaquine Phosphate Tablets are used for the radical cure of vivax malaria — meaning they target and eliminate the dormant liver forms of the Plasmodium vivax parasite that can cause the infection to come back (relapse). This is different from treating the active blood-stage infection, which is usually handled first with another medicine like chloroquine.

Primaquine Phosphate Tablets are also used after a course of chloroquine suppressive therapy in areas where vivax malaria is common, to prevent relapse once that preventive treatment ends.
