What Is Droxidopa Used For?

Brand name: Northera

Droxidopa capsules and Northera (the brand-name version) are both used to treat the dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling of nearly blacking out that comes with neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (nOH) — a drop in blood pressure when you stand up, caused by a problem with the nervous system.

Both products are approved for adults whose nOH is caused by Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy, pure autonomic failure, dopamine beta-hydroxylase deficiency, or non-diabetic autonomic neuropathy. It's worth knowing that the evidence for effectiveness beyond 2 weeks of treatment has not been firmly established, so your doctor will check periodically whether it's still working for you.
