Lactoferrin and Peginterferon alfa-2b

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Peginterferon alfa-2b and Lactoferrin in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Lactoferrin at all — not against Peginterferon alfa-2b, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

What Peginterferon alfa-2b Is Prescribed For, and What Lactoferrin Has Been Studied For

These two come up together because they touch the same health topic — not because they do the same job. Peginterferon alfa-2b is a prescription medicine with approved uses on its FDA label. Lactoferrin is a supplement: what follows is what researchers have looked at it for, and how strong that evidence is.

Lactoferrin has been studied for:

  • Hepatitis C studied, not established Lactoferrin has been studied for this. Natural Medicines rates the evidence: Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate Read what the research shows

    Lactoferrin for hepatitis c

It is unclear if oral lactoferrin is beneficial for hepatitis C.

Effectiveness ratings and the research summaries above are the verbatim record from the Natural Medicines database, which grades evidence from “Effective” down to “Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate”. A rating below the top of that scale means researchers have looked at it — not that it works, and never that it can stand in for a prescribed medicine. Do not stop or replace Peginterferon alfa-2b on your own; if you are taking Lactoferrin for the same health topic, tell your prescriber, especially if the medicine is being adjusted to a target.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Peginterferon alfa-2b page

“Someone taking peginterferon alfa-2b (Peg-Intron) is usually treating hepatitis C, so the liver is already the organ under strain, and all 38 supplement interactions on file for this drug pile additional liver stress on top of it. That earns genuine caution.”

About Lactoferrin

What is Lactoferrin?

  • Iron deficiency and anemia support
  • Immune support
  • Gut health
  • Stomach (H. pylori) infection
  • Acne
  • Diarrhea prevention in infants

Lactoferrin is an iron-binding protein found naturally in milk and other body fluids, and supplements are usually made from cow's milk or rice. It is being studied for immune support, iron levels, gut health, and infections, but the evidence is still limited and mixed for most uses. It is generally well tolerated, but talk with a pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

Protein from milk (colostrum), or made with recombinant technology · Capsules, tablets, powders; also added to some infant formulas and functional foods

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Lactoferrin is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Lactoferrin record says about it on its own.

Lactoferrin: dosing

There is no official standardized dose of lactoferrin, and the right amount can depend on the product, the form, and the reason for use. Doses used in research have varied widely. The best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed the recommended amount.

About Peginterferon Alfa-2b (PEG-Intron)

What Is Peginterferon Alfa-2b (PEG-Intron) Used For?

Brand names: Peg-Intron, ViraferonPeg

  • Peginterferon alfa-2b is used alone or in combination with ribavirin (a medication) to treat chronic (long-term) hepatitis C infection (swelling of the liver caused by a virus) in people who show signs of liver damage and who have not been treated with interferon alpha (medication similar to peginterferon alfa-2b) in the past. Peginterferon alfa-2b is in a class of medications called interferons. Peginterferon alfa-2b is a combination of interferon and polyethylene glycol, which helps the interferon stay active in your body for a longer period of time. Peginterferon alpha-2b works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Peginterferon alfa-2b may not cure hepatitis C or prevent you from developing complications of hepatitis C such as cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver failure, or liver cancer. Peginterferon alfa-2b may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
