ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Ibuprofen, Pseudoephedrine
Ibuprofen, Pseudoephedrine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Plum interacts with.
Consuming plum juice while taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding. In healthy volunteers, drinking plum juice 200 mL daily for 28 days prolonged clotting time and inhibited platelet aggregation.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to keep in mind with a product like Dristan: the ibuprofen part already nudges up your bleeding risk a little on its own, since it's an NSAID that affects how your platelets stick together and can irritate the stomach lining. There's some early research suggesting plum juice (in fairly concentrated, daily amounts) may also gently thin the blood by slowing clotting and platelet clumping. Stacked together, that could mean a bit more bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach upset.
I want to be honest though, this is mostly theoretical and based on limited data. A few plums or prunes as food shouldn't be an issue. If you're drinking large amounts of plum juice regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.
