Plum and Enoxaparin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Enoxaparin

Enoxaparin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Plum interacts with.

Theoretically, plum juice might have antiplatelet effects.
Consuming plum juice while taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding. In healthy volunteers, drinking plum juice 200 mL daily for 28 days prolonged clotting time and inhibited platelet aggregation.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Enoxaparin (Lovenox) is a blood thinner you inject to keep dangerous clots from forming. Here's the thing about plums: some research suggests that drinking plum juice regularly can slow down clotting and make your platelets less sticky. In one small study, healthy folks who drank about 200 mL of plum juice daily for 28 days had longer clotting times.

Stacking that mild blood-thinning effect on top of your Lovenox could nudge up your risk of bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding that's harder to stop. The good news is that eating a normal serving of plums or a few prunes for digestion is very unlikely to cause trouble. It's the daily concentrated juice or supplements I'd watch. If you're planning that, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

  • General nutrition

Plums and their dried form (prunes) are common, nutritious foods that are best known for helping relieve constipation thanks to their fiber and sorbitol content. About Enoxaparin Injection

What Is Enoxaparin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Lovenox

Enoxaparin injection is used to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) — blood clots in the legs — in people having abdominal surgery, hip replacement surgery, or knee replacement surgery, and in hospitalized patients who are largely immobile due to acute illness. It is also used to treat acute DVT, with or without a pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs), both in the hospital and at home.

It is also used alongside aspirin to reduce dangerous complications of unstable angina and non-Q-wave heart attack, and to treat acute STEMI (a severe type of heart attack involving full blockage of a coronary artery) in patients who receive clot-dissolving therapy or undergo a procedure to open the blocked artery (PCI).
