Overview
Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy is not an herb or a supplement. It is a device-based treatment that sends short bursts, or pulses, of low-level electromagnetic energy into the body. Because it is a therapy rather than something you swallow, there is no plant, herb, or natural source behind it.
PEMF devices come in many shapes, including mats you lie on, pads or wraps you place over a sore joint, rings, and handheld wands. Some are used in clinics and hospitals, while many smaller versions are sold for home use.
People use PEMF for a wide range of reasons, from helping broken bones heal to easing everyday aches, supporting recovery after exercise, and promoting relaxation. The amount of scientific support behind these uses varies a lot from one condition to another.
How it works
PEMF devices create a magnetic field that turns on and off rapidly. The idea is that these pulses pass through the body and may influence the activity of cells, including bone-building cells and cells involved in inflammation and repair.
Proposed mechanisms include changing how charged particles (ions) move across cell membranes, encouraging the formation of new bone, and affecting blood flow and inflammation signals. Much of this comes from laboratory and animal research, and scientists do not fully understand exactly how PEMF affects the body in real-world use.
Because devices differ widely in frequency, strength, and how the pulses are shaped, findings from one device or study may not apply to another.

Safety & precautions
For most healthy adults, PEMF is generally considered well tolerated when devices are used as directed. However, it is not right for everyone.
People with implanted electronic devices — such as pacemakers, defibrillators, insulin pumps, or cochlear implants — should not use PEMF unless a doctor specifically clears it, because the magnetic field could interfere with the device. People with active cancer, epilepsy, or other serious conditions should also check with their doctor first.
During pregnancy, PEMF should be avoided unless a healthcare provider recommends it, since its safety for the developing baby has not been established. Because there is little research on use while breastfeeding, caution is advised there as well. Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting PEMF, especially if you have a medical condition.
Side effects
Reported side effects are usually mild. Some people notice tingling, warmth, mild dizziness, headache, or a temporary increase in pain or discomfort in the treated area. These effects often go away after stopping or lowering the intensity.
Serious problems are uncommon in healthy people. The main serious concern is interference with implanted electronic medical devices, which is why those individuals should avoid PEMF unless told otherwise by their doctor. If you feel unwell during use, stop and seek medical advice.
