Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product is straightforward: it's a single active ingredient, glycine, in powder form with no fillers or other inactive ingredients. Glycine is an amino acid your body makes naturally and uses in protein synthesis and nervous system function.

The supplement provides pure glycine in a simple, no-nonsense format.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Glycine's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Glycine for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Schizophrenia — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

The evidence for glycine is mixed depending on what you're using it for. For schizophrenia, it's rated possibly effective — meaning there's some clinical support, though it's not a first-line treatment and works best as an add-on to other medications under medical supervision.

For 3-phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (3-PGDH) deficiency, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and cystic fibrosis, the evidence isn't established well enough for us to rate it. If you're considering glycine for one of those conditions, your doctor can help weigh what we know.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Glycine is generally well tolerated at typical doses, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects are mild and rare — a small number of people report mild sedation, soft stools, nausea, vomiting, or upper stomach discomfort that goes away quickly when you stop taking it.

Irritability, insomnia, fatigue, memory problems, headache, dry mouth, and sensory changes have been reported, but we're not certain they're caused by glycine itself. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, we don't hold enough safety data to say either way — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance on whether it's right for you.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Glycine.

  • For scale: 1 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take clozapine (Clozaril) for schizophrenia, don't add glycine without checking with your doctor or pharmacist first — it may make the medication less effective. That's the only medication-type interaction we have documented for this ingredient.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

This is a simple, single-ingredient supplement. If you take clozapine for schizophrenia, check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting — glycine may interfere with how well it works.

For other uses, the evidence is limited or still being studied. A pharmacist can help you figure out if it's the right fit.

Theoretically, glycine might decrease the effectiveness of clozapine.
One small clinical study in patients with schizophrenia shows that adding glycine to clozapine therapy worsens symptoms of schizophrenia when compared with clozapine alone. The mechanism of this interaction is unclear.

100% Pure Glycine by NutraBio: Common Questions

Does 100% Pure Glycine by NutraBio interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, 100% Pure Glycine has a known interaction with 1 medication. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
100% Pure Glycine contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What exactly is glycine and what does it do in the body?
Glycine is an amino acid — a building block your body uses to make proteins and support your nervous system. This supplement gives you additional glycine beyond what your body naturally produces.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
We don't hold enough safety data to say whether glycine is safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.
What side effects should I watch for?
Mild sedation, soft stools, nausea, vomiting, and stomach discomfort are rare but have been reported and go away when you stop. Headache, irritability, insomnia, fatigue, and dry mouth have also been noted, though we're not certain glycine causes them.
Does glycine really work for schizophrenia?
It's rated possibly effective for schizophrenia as an add-on to other medications, meaning there's some clinical evidence — but it's not a main treatment and should only be used under medical supervision.
Is this supplement just glycine with nothing else in it?
Yes — it's 100% pure glycine powder with no fillers, binders, or other inactive ingredients.
