Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: angelica (also called ashitaba), a 450 mg dose per capsule. The capsule itself is made from gelatin and water, which are inactive ingredients that just hold the angelica powder.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Ashitaba product and its label doesn't state a use — see Ashitaba's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for angelica's effectiveness in alcohol-related liver disease is not established — we have insufficient reliable evidence to rate whether it works for that purpose based on the data we hold.

How safe is it?

Some data gaps
Safety Information · database check
Some gaps

Safety data exists for these ingredients, but with some important gaps.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 0 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Angelica is generally well tolerated as a food, but its safety as a concentrated supplement hasn't been studied thoroughly. The safety data advises against using this supplement during pregnancy or while breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe in those situations.

If you're pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you.

Moderate interaction found

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Ashitaba.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 186 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take Angelica Root, double-check any medications your body breaks down using the liver enzyme cytochrome P450 1A2 — ashitaba may slow that process and raise how much of the drug stays in your system. Use the medication search tool on this page with your exact prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs to be sure.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.

Angelica Root may interest you if you're exploring traditional remedies, but the evidence for its effectiveness isn't established yet. The main thing to watch is whether you take medications broken down by CYP1A2 — if you do, check with us or the tool below before starting.

It's not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Run your medications through the checker before you add this to your routine.

Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates

In vitro research shows that ashitaba extract inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A2. Theoretically, concomitant use of ashitaba with CYP1A2 substrates might decrease the clearance of these substrates and increase the risk for adverse effects. However, this interaction has yet to be reported in humans. Until more is known, use with caution.

How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Angelica Root 450 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.

The safety data advises against it — there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe during pregnancy or while nursing. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your specific situation before starting this supplement.
Does angelica actually work for liver health?
The evidence we have isn't strong enough yet to say whether it works for alcohol-related liver disease. We'd need more reliable research to make that call.
What's ashitaba, and why does the label say angelica?
Angelica and ashitaba are the same plant — it just goes by different common names depending on where you are. This product contains ashitaba extract at 450 mg per capsule.
