What’s inside
Low disclosure
This capsule contains two active ingredients: slippery elm and bloodroot, plus hypromellose (the capsule material itself). Slippery elm is the inner bark of the slippery elm tree, traditionally used to soothe the digestive tract.
Bloodroot is a plant extract that's been studied for oral health.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for what this formula actually does is limited. Slippery elm hasn't been studied enough to know whether it works for cancer, constipation, cough, diarrhea, or inflammatory bowel disease — the data just isn't there yet.
Bloodroot shows some promise for dental plaque and gingivitis, though even that's called 'possibly effective' rather than proven. For periodontitis, the evidence is also insufficient.
So we really don't have solid data on whether this combination works for its intended purpose.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Slippery elm is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but high-quality safety data are limited. Some sources caution against it during pregnancy, and there's too little information on safety while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about either situation.
Bloodroot is a different story: it's potentially toxic and corrosive, and we don't recommend it for self-treatment. Topical contact with fresh bloodroot can cause irritation or scarring; long-term oral use has been linked to mouth sores, leukoplakia, taste problems, and tooth staining.
High doses may cause nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure (hypotension), or even shock. Bloodroot is likely unsafe in pregnancy and possibly unsafe while breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Slippery elm can slow or reduce the absorption of oral medications — anything you take by mouth. This is a moderate-severity interaction that may make your drugs less effective.
Check all oral medications, including over-the-counter ones, before you start this supplement.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product pairs an herb with limited safety data (slippery elm) and one with significant safety concerns (bloodroot). If you take any oral medications, you need to check them against this product's interactions first.
Given bloodroot's toxicity profile and the weak evidence for either ingredient's effectiveness, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether this is the right choice for you.
