Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 2 of its 2 active ingredients.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product has 2 active ingredients: bovine liver and bovine heart — both organ meats in capsule form. These are concentrated organ extracts, meant to deliver the nutrients found in the whole tissues.

Gelatin is the only inactive ingredient listed.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Liver Extract's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: supports energy, endurance, stamina and athletic performance.
  • We looked for evidence on: Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), Athletic endurance, Physical stamina, Exercise performance.
  • The closest evidence on file: Liver Extract is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) (Natural Medicines).

The evidence for bovine liver in chronic fatigue syndrome is possibly ineffective, meaning studies haven't shown it works for that condition. For hepatitis C, we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate whether it helps.

We hold no effectiveness data for the bovine heart ingredient.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

No adverse reactions have been reported in the data we hold, but a thorough safety evaluation hasn't been done. There are concerns worth knowing about: liver extract can deliver very high levels of vitamin A and iron, both of which can build up to harmful levels.

There's also a sourcing concern — liver comes from slaughterhouses and may come from sick or diseased animals, or potentially from cattle in countries where bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, a brain disease in cattle) has been found. No cases of BSE transfer to humans from liver extract have been reported, but the risk isn't zero.

Pregnant people should avoid this product unless their doctor advises otherwise, because the high vitamin A could harm a developing baby. Safety during breastfeeding hasn't been well studied — talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

Minor interactions only
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Liver Extract.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 3 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Double-check this product before you start if you take warfarin or other blood thinners, or if you take iron supplements or iron-containing medications. No interactions are documented for the bovine heart ingredient — we hold no data for it.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.

If you're interested in organ-based supplements and don't take warfarin or iron supplements, this product is generally well tolerated in food amounts. If you take blood thinners or iron supplements, or you're pregnant, check with your pharmacist first.

Iron

Liver extract can contain heme iron. Taking liver extract with iron-containing medications or supplements may increase total iron intake and could increase the risk of gastrointestinal adverse effects or excessive iron accumulation. The risk is greater with high doses, prolonged use, or in individuals with hemochromatosis or another iron-overload disorder. Review the iron content of the liver extract and the total elemental iron dose. Avoid unnecessary duplicate iron supplementation and consider monitoring ferritin and transferrin saturation when clinically appropriate.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Warfarin (Coumadin)

Liver extract products may contain small and variable amounts of vitamin K. Theoretically, starting, stopping, or substantially changing the amount of liver extract used could reduce the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and lower the INR. However, this interaction has not been directly studied or reported in humans, and the vitamin K content of liver extract products is generally not standardized. Consider monitoring the INR after a meaningful change in liver extract use.

Beef Heart by Codeage: Common Questions

Does Beef Heart by Codeage interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Beef Heart has a known interaction with 3 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Beef Heart contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is this safe during pregnancy?
No — the liver can contain very high levels of vitamin A, which may harm a developing baby. Avoid it unless your doctor specifically advises you to use it.
What is bovine liver supposed to do?
It's an organ extract meant to deliver the nutrients naturally present in beef liver. The facts we hold don't describe what specific benefit it's meant to provide, so talk with your pharmacist about what you're hoping it will do for you.
Can I take this with iron supplements?
Not without checking first. Beef liver contains heme iron, so combining it with iron supplements could raise your total intake and increase the risk of stomach problems or iron buildup in your body — especially if you take high doses or use it long-term.
Is bovine heart safe to use?
We couldn't find interaction or safety data for the bovine heart ingredient, so we can't tell you what we know about it. Your pharmacist can help you figure out whether it's right for you.
Can this product cause side effects?
No adverse reactions have been reported in the data we hold, but a thorough safety evaluation hasn't been done. The main concerns are the high vitamin A and iron content — both can accumulate to harmful levels — and potential contamination from the source cattle.
