Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: reduce muscle fatigue during high-intensity exercise.
  • We looked for evidence on: Athletic performance, Physical performance, Exercise-induced muscle breakdown, muscle endurance, anaerobic capacity, lactic acid buffering.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Beta-alanine is rated "Possibly Effective" for Athletic performance (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Beta-alanine is rated "Possibly Effective" for Physical performance.
  • Also on file: Beta-alanine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Exercise-induced muscle breakdown.

Beta-alanine is possibly effective for athletic performance and physical performance. The evidence for its use in age-related cognitive decline, COPD, general cognitive function, and menopausal symptoms is insufficient to rate at this time.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Beta-alanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. The most common side effect is a harmless tingling sensation (paresthesia) and flushing, usually starting on the scalp within 20 minutes of taking a dose and spreading across the body for roughly an hour.

This effect is dose-dependent — it's very mild at lower doses and may not occur at all in some people. There is not enough safety information to recommend beta-alanine during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

If you're pregnant, nursing, or planning either, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product. Long-term safety at high doses hasn't been studied.

Formula

Beta-Alanine is a non-essential beta amino-acid made with CarnoSyn, a patented ingredient clinically proven to reduce muscle fatigue by counteracting the development of lactic acid, created by an influx of hydrogen ions (H+). When Beta-Alanine is readily available in the bloodstream, Carnoine levels rise which delay the buildup of H+ ions, translating into delayed muscle fatigue, better strength, endurance, and optimized performance.
