This product contains a single active ingredient: betaine anhydrous. Betaine is a naturally occurring compound that plays a role in how your body handles a substance called homocysteine — an amino acid your cells produce during normal metabolism.
The powder form lets you mix it into drinks or food as needed.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Betaine anhydrous is effective for homocystinuria, a genetic condition where homocysteine builds up to harmful levels in the blood. It's possibly effective for hyperhomocysteinemia, a milder elevation of homocysteine linked to heart health.
For nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NASH), depression, and reflux disease (GERD), the evidence isn't established well enough for us to rate it — meaning we don't have enough reliable data to say whether it works for those uses.
How safe is it?

Betaine anhydrous is generally well tolerated at studied doses, but the safety data overall isn't robust. The most common side effects are body odor, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and GI distress — mostly mild and manageable.
Rarely, cerebral edema (fluid buildup in the brain) has been reported, though this is uncommon. Safety during breastfeeding is not well established, so if you're nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
