HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Bilberry by Tonic Tinctures
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: bilberry (also called European blueberry). Bilberry fruit has anthocyanidins and other compounds traditionally used to support eye health and circulation.
The liquid form also includes water and alcohol as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Leans against
The evidence for bilberry's effectiveness is mixed. For night vision, the data suggests it's likely ineffective—we don't have strong science backing that claim.
For other uses like age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, and chronic venous insufficiency, there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Bilberry fruit in food amounts is generally well tolerated. When taken as a concentrated supplement, however, long-term safety data are limited, so caution is advised.
The most common side effects are dark-colored stools, flatulence, and mild stomach discomfort. Some people report temporary GI upset or even bluish-black discoloration of the tongue and teeth—these effects are harmless but can be striking.
Bilberry is considered likely safe in pregnancy and lactation, though concentrated supplement use in these periods should be discussed with your doctor or pharmacist.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check your exact medications with the search tool on this page. Pay closest attention if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or clopidogrel), diabetes medications, erlotinib (Tarceva), or any drug that's broken down by your liver's CYP2E1 enzyme.
All of these have documented Moderate-severity interactions with bilberry.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with graded evidence leaning against its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Bilberry may be worth considering if you're looking for traditional eye-health support, though the scientific backing is weak. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or cancer drugs like erlotinib, check with us before starting—the interaction risk is real.

Bilberry by Tonic Tinctures Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Bilberry by Tonic Tinctures contains one active ingredient—bilberry fruit extract—which does interact with a number of medications.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, and clopidogrel). Bilberry's compounds can slow clotting, so combining it with these medications may theoretically raise your bleeding risk.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Bilberry also interacts with diabetes medications. If you take drugs to lower blood sugar, adding bilberry could push your levels too low (a condition called hypoglycemia).
Additionally, bilberry may speed up how your liver breaks down certain cancer drugs—specifically erlotinib (Tarceva)—and other medications metabolized by a liver enzyme called CYP2E1, which could make those drugs less effective.
Altogether, these interactions span 274 individual medications. Before you start this product, use the medication checker below to run through your exact prescriptions.

For each ingredient in Bilberry with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Bilberry
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, bilberry fruit extract might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro, animal, and clinical research suggest that anthocyanidin extracts from bilberry can inhibit platelet aggregation.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, bilberry leaf or fruit extract may increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that bilberry leaf extract might have blood glucose-lowering activity. Also, one small clinical trial in patients with type 2 diabetes shows that taking bilberry fruit extract 470 mg as a single dose prior to an oral glucose tolerance test lowers plasma glucose levels when compared with placebo.
Cytochrome P450 2E1 (Cyp2E1) Substrates
Theoretically, bilberry fruit extract might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2E1.
Animal research shows that exposure to small concentrations of bilberry extract in drinking water for around one month increased CYP2E1 activity by 31%. However, exposure over a 2-month period did not increase CYP2E1 activity. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Erlotinib (Tarceva)
Theoretically, bilberry fruit extract might reduce the efficacy of erlotinib.
In vitro research suggests that bilberry fruit extract and its constituents, delphinidin and delphinidin-3-O-glucoside, inhibit the activity of erlotinib. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
