What’s inside
Full disclosure
Bilberry Leaf 450 mg contains one active ingredient: bilberry extract. Bilberry is a berry plant whose leaves and fruit have been studied for their anthocyanidins — potent plant compounds with antioxidant properties.
The inactive ingredients are gelatin and water, which make up the capsule.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for bilberry is mixed and often limited. Night vision shows possibly ineffective evidence.
For age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration, atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, and chronic venous insufficiency, the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate — meaning studies are either too small, too few, or too mixed to draw firm conclusions. If you're considering this supplement for one of these uses, your doctor or pharmacist can help you weigh what evidence does exist against other options.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Bilberry fruit itself is generally well tolerated as a food. However, supplement-level safety data are limited, especially long-term.
The safety notes advise caution with concentrated supplements due to lack of long-term safety evidence. Common side effects are mild: dark-colored stools, flatulence, and stomach discomfort.
Some studies report temporary GI upset in a small number of trial participants. You may also notice your stools and tongue turn dark blue or black — this is harmless and temporary.
Bilberry is rated Likely Safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin) — Moderate risk of increased bleeding. Also double-check diabetes medications, CYP2E1 substrates, and erlotinib (Tarceva), all Moderate severity.
Use the tool below to search your exact medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Bilberry Leaf may appeal to you if you're interested in its antioxidant properties, but evidence for most uses is limited or absent. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or certain cancer drugs, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — bilberry may affect how these work.

Bilberry Leaf 450 mg by TerraVita Premium Collection Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Bilberry Leaf 450 mg from TerraVita Premium Collection does interact with several medication types.
The most serious concern is blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (Moderate severity) — bilberry may increase bleeding risk. Research shows its anthocyanidins can slow down how platelets clump together, so if you take warfarin, aspirin, or similar medications, you'll want to discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Bilberry also carries Moderate-severity interactions with diabetes medications and with drugs broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP2E1. It may lower blood sugar, raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when combined with diabetes drugs.
For CYP2E1 substrates, animal data hints bilberry might speed up how your body clears these drugs, though the effect appears inconsistent. Additionally, there's a Moderate theoretical interaction with erlotinib (Tarceva), a cancer drug — bilberry may reduce its effectiveness.
Altogether, these interactions span 275 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to see if any of your prescriptions are affected, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist before you start this supplement.

For each ingredient in Bilberry Leaf 450 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Bilberry
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, bilberry fruit extract might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro, animal, and clinical research suggest that anthocyanidin extracts from bilberry can inhibit platelet aggregation.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, bilberry leaf or fruit extract may increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that bilberry leaf extract might have blood glucose-lowering activity. Also, one small clinical trial in patients with type 2 diabetes shows that taking bilberry fruit extract 470 mg as a single dose prior to an oral glucose tolerance test lowers plasma glucose levels when compared with placebo.
Cytochrome P450 2E1 (Cyp2E1) Substrates
Theoretically, bilberry fruit extract might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2E1.
Animal research shows that exposure to small concentrations of bilberry extract in drinking water for around one month increased CYP2E1 activity by 31%. However, exposure over a 2-month period did not increase CYP2E1 activity. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Erlotinib (Tarceva)
Theoretically, bilberry fruit extract might reduce the efficacy of erlotinib.
In vitro research suggests that bilberry fruit extract and its constituents, delphinidin and delphinidin-3-O-glucoside, inhibit the activity of erlotinib. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
