Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Pau D'arco product and its label doesn't state a use — see Pau D'arco's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence we hold on pau d'arco doesn't establish that it works reliably for cancer, peptic ulcers, wound healing, or painful periods (dysmenorrhea). Each of these uses is rated as having insufficient reliable evidence, which means we don't have enough solid data to say whether it helps.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Pau d'arco is generally well tolerated at typical doses, but safety data in humans is limited. At higher doses—specifically, when the lapachol compound exceeds 1.5 grams daily—it may cause anemia, increased bleeding risk, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

The safety data advises against use during pregnancy due to possible harm to a developing baby. There isn't enough data to know whether it's safe while breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're nursing.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Pau D'arco.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 122 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take this product, double-check any blood thinners or antiplatelet medications you're on (such as warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, or dabigatran) with your pharmacist or doctor. These drugs and pau d'arco together may raise your bleeding risk.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Pau d'arco powder may appeal to people exploring traditional remedies, but the evidence for its claimed uses isn't established in our data. More importantly, if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs, this product poses a real interaction risk.

Check your exact medications before starting, and discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist—especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or considering higher doses.

Pau D'Arco Bark (Ipe Roxo) Powder by TerraVita Premium Collection: Common Questions

Does Pau D'Arco Bark (Ipe Roxo) Powder by TerraVita Premium Collection interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Pau D'Arco Bark (Ipe Roxo) Powder has a known interaction with 122 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Pau D'Arco Bark (Ipe Roxo) Powder contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take pau d'arco if I'm pregnant or nursing?
The safety data advises against pau d'arco during pregnancy because of possible harm to your baby. If you're breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information available either way. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you in these situations.
What dose is safe?
Our data shows that doses of the lapachol compound above 1.5 grams daily may cause anemia, bleeding risk, and severe digestive upset. Human safety data overall is limited, so there's no clear 'safe' dose we can point to. Your pharmacist or doctor can help you figure out what's appropriate for you.
Does pau d'arco really help with cancer or ulcers?
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that pau d'arco works for cancer, peptic ulcers, wound healing, or period pain. There just isn't enough reliable research data to say either way.
What are the side effects?
At higher doses (lapachol above 1.5 grams daily), pau d'arco may cause anemia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and increased bleeding. People with occupational exposure to pau d'arco sawdust have also developed asthma and severe skin reactions, though that's less of a concern with finished powder.
