Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin that plays a role in hair, skin, and nail health. At 10,000 micrograms per capsule, this is a high-dose supplement—well above what you'd get from food alone.

The capsule itself is made from cellulose, with magnesium stearate and silica as inactive ingredients.

Does it work?

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: support healthy skin, hair, and nails.
  • We looked for evidence on: Biotin deficiency, Brittle nails, Seborrheic dermatitis, hair loss, nail health.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Likely Effective" for Biotin deficiency (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Seborrheic dermatitis.
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Brittle nails.

Biotin is likely effective for biotin deficiency, a rare condition in which your body lacks enough of this B vitamin. For other uses—like hair loss (alopecia areata), multiple sclerosis, or seborrheic dermatitis (a scaly skin condition)—the evidence is weaker.

We don't have reliable evidence that biotin helps alopecia areata, and it appears possibly ineffective for MS and seborrheic dermatitis. Talk with your doctor about what biotin can realistically do for your specific concern.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because your body removes excess amounts in urine. High-dose biotin has rarely been linked to mild diarrhea; in one small trial, two patients taking 300 mg daily (much higher than this product) reported transient mild diarrhea.

One case report described a patient who developed a rare chest inflammation after taking biotin and another supplement together, but the cause wasn't clear and no other similar cases have been reported. Because this is a high-dose product, check with your doctor before starting it.

During pregnancy and lactation, normal dietary and supplement amounts are likely safe, but discuss high-dose biotin with your doctor first—the safety data rates it likely safe in these periods, but it's worth confirming dosing with your healthcare provider.

Biotin 10,000 mcg by Woodstock Vitamins: Common Questions

Does Biotin 10,000 mcg by Woodstock Vitamins interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Biotin 10,000 mcg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Biotin 10,000 mcg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will biotin help my hair grow?
We don't have reliable evidence that biotin helps hair loss (alopecia areata). If hair loss is your concern, ask your doctor or dermatologist what's actually causing it and what treatments might work best—biotin alone may not be the answer.
Is 10,000 mcg a safe dose?
Biotin is generally well tolerated even at high doses because your body gets rid of excess in urine. That said, this is a high-dose product, so check with your doctor before you start it to make sure it's right for you.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant?
Normal dietary and supplement amounts of biotin are likely safe in pregnancy, but because this is a high-dose product, talk with your doctor first about whether it's appropriate for you.
What is biotin actually for?
Biotin is a B vitamin that your body uses for hair, skin, and nail health, and it plays a role in energy and carbohydrate metabolism. It's likely effective if you have a biotin deficiency, which is rare.
What are the side effects?
High-dose biotin has rarely been linked to mild diarrhea. One isolated case report mentioned a rare chest inflammation in someone taking biotin along with another supplement, but the cause wasn't clear and no other similar cases have surfaced.
