Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin your body uses for hair, skin, and nail health, as well as energy metabolism. The remaining ingredients — dicalcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, modified cellulose, rice extract, rice hulls, gum arabic, and sunflower oil — are inactive ingredients that help form and preserve the capsule.

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Supports healthy hair, skin and nails.
  • We looked for evidence on: Biotin deficiency, Brittle nails, Hair loss, Nail strength, Skin quality.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Likely Effective" for Biotin deficiency (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Brittle nails.

Biotin is likely effective for treating biotin deficiency, which is rare in people eating a typical diet. For other uses listed on supplement labels — multiple sclerosis, seborrheic dermatitis (a scaly skin condition), and hair loss — the evidence doesn't support benefit or shows insufficient data.

If you're considering biotin for one of those conditions, talk with your doctor about what the science actually shows and whether it's the right choice for you.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because your body excretes what it doesn't use. High-dose biotin has rarely been linked to mild diarrhea; one documented case involved a patient taking 300 mg daily.

There's one isolated case report of a serious inflammatory reaction in someone taking biotin 10 mg plus other supplements, but it's unclear whether biotin was the cause. At this dose of 5,000 mcg (5 mg), the risk appears very low.

Pregnancy and lactation: biotin from food and prenatal vitamins is considered likely safe, but check with your doctor before taking high-dose supplements during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.

This product is useful if you have a biotin deficiency, though that's uncommon in people eating normally. If you're taking it for hair, skin, or nails in hopes of visible improvement, the evidence doesn't back that up — talk with your doctor about realistic expectations.

There are no documented medication interactions, so it won't interfere with drugs you're taking. Discuss high-dose biotin with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you're pregnant, nursing, or have any health concerns.

Biotin 5,000 mcg by Lake Avenue Nutrition: Common Questions

Does Biotin 5,000 mcg by Lake Avenue Nutrition interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Biotin 5,000 mcg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Biotin 5,000 mcg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does biotin really help with hair loss or thinning?
The evidence doesn't support it. Biotin is only proven effective for treating an actual biotin deficiency — a rare condition. For hair loss and alopecia areata, we don't have enough reliable evidence either way. If you're experiencing hair loss, your doctor can help figure out what's causing it and whether biotin or another approach is right for you.
Is it safe to take 5,000 mcg of biotin every day?
Yes, at this dose biotin is generally well tolerated. Your body clears excess through urine, so it doesn't accumulate. High-dose biotin has rarely caused mild diarrhea, but that's uncommon. If you're pregnant, nursing, or have any health concerns, check with your doctor first — amounts from food and standard prenatal vitamins are fine, but discuss high-dose supplements before starting.
Will biotin interfere with my medications?
No interactions are documented between biotin and medications in our data. That said, you're welcome to search your specific drugs in the tool on this page for complete confidence, and your pharmacist can also review your full medication list with you.
What is biotin, and why do I need it?
Biotin is a B vitamin your body uses to break down food into energy and to support healthy hair, skin, and nails. Most people get enough from eating eggs, fish, nuts, and leafy greens, so a deficiency is rare. It's only proven effective for treating that deficiency — not for improving appearance or treating other conditions.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Biotin from food and prenatal vitamins is considered likely safe during pregnancy and lactation. Before taking this high-dose supplement, talk with your doctor or midwife to make sure it's right for your situation.
