Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin your body uses to build healthy hair, skin, and nails. The capsule also holds rice flour, hypromellose, stearic acid, and silicon dioxide as inactive ingredients — these are fillers and binders that help hold the capsule together.

Does it work?

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Biotin for normal growth and body function.
  • We looked for evidence on: Biotin deficiency, Brittle nails, Hair health, Skin health, Nail strength, Metabolism support.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Likely Effective" for Biotin deficiency (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Brittle nails.

Biotin is likely effective for biotin deficiency — a real condition, though rare in people eating a normal diet. For multiple sclerosis, seborrheic dermatitis (a scaly, itchy skin condition), and hair loss from alopecia areata, the evidence we hold is not strong enough to say it works.

If you're taking biotin for one of those conditions, talk with your doctor about whether the data supports it for your specific situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because your body clears excess in the urine. High-dose biotin has rarely been linked to mild diarrhea — one trial reported this in a small number of participants taking 300 mg daily.

A single case report described a skin and lung condition (eosinophilic pleuropericarditis) in an older woman taking biotin 10 mg daily along with other supplements and medications, but it's unclear whether biotin was the cause. Normal food and supplement amounts are considered likely safe in pregnancy and lactation, though you should check with your doctor before taking high-dose products while pregnant or nursing.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.

If you have a documented biotin deficiency, this supplement makes sense. For hair, skin, or nail health in general, the evidence is thin.

Either way, biotin is well tolerated and doesn't interact with medications we could check — but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting if you're pregnant, nursing, or considering a long-term high-dose regimen.

Formula

Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin necessary for normal growth and body function. Biotin functions as a key regulatory element in gluconeogenesis, fatty acid synthesis, and in the metabolism of some amino acids. Alongside its role in energy production, biotin enhances the synthesis of certain proteins. In addition, biotin promotes healthy immune system function and plays a critical role in skin health.

Biotin 5,000 mcg by NOW: Common Questions

Does Biotin 5,000 mcg by NOW interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Biotin 5,000 mcg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Biotin 5,000 mcg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does biotin actually help hair and nails grow?
The evidence we have doesn't strongly support it for alopecia areata (hair loss) or general hair and nail health. Biotin is proven to treat biotin deficiency, which is rare. If you're concerned about hair or nail loss, talk with your doctor first — there may be an underlying cause worth investigating.
Can I take this while I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
Normal amounts from food and prenatal vitamins are considered likely safe in pregnancy and lactation. But because this is a high-dose supplement, check with your doctor before starting it — they know your personal health history and can give you personalized advice.
What are the side effects of high-dose biotin?
High-dose biotin has rarely caused mild diarrhea. A single case report linked very high doses to a serious skin and lung condition, but it's not clear biotin was actually the cause. At normal doses, side effects are uncommon.
Does biotin help with seborrheic dermatitis?
The evidence we hold says it's possibly ineffective for that condition. If you have seborrheic dermatitis, ask your doctor or dermatologist what treatments actually work for you.
Is biotin safe to take long-term?
Biotin is generally well tolerated because excess amounts are removed in your urine. That said, high-dose products taken over a long time should be discussed with your doctor first, just to be sure it's right for you.
