Full

Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin your body uses to break down food into energy and maintain healthy skin and hair. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — dicalcium phosphate, gelatin, microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, talc, magnesium stearate, calcium silicate, and sodium lauryl sulfate — that help form and preserve the capsule.

Does it work?

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: healthy hair, skin, and metabolism support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Biotin deficiency, Brittle nails, Seborrheic dermatitis, Hair thinning, Nail health.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Likely Effective" for Biotin deficiency (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Seborrheic dermatitis.
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Brittle nails.

Biotin is likely effective for biotin deficiency, which occurs when your body doesn't get enough of this vitamin from food. For other uses — multiple sclerosis, seborrheic dermatitis (a scaly, itchy scalp condition), and alopecia areata (patchy hair loss) — the evidence is weaker.

The research doesn't support it for MS or seborrheic dermatitis, and there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to rate it for alopecia areata.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at high doses, because your body excretes excess amounts in urine. A small number of people taking very high doses (300 mg daily) reported mild diarrhea, and one isolated case report described a reaction involving inflammation around the heart and lungs in a person taking 10 mg of biotin alongside other supplements and medications — but it's unclear whether biotin was the cause.

The safety data suggests amounts from food and prenatal vitamins are fine, but talk with your doctor before taking high-dose biotin supplements. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, biotin is rated likely safe.

Biotin 5,000 mcg by up&up: Common Questions

Does Biotin 5,000 mcg by up&up interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Biotin 5,000 mcg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Biotin 5,000 mcg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will biotin help my hair grow back or stop hair loss?
The evidence doesn't support biotin for alopecia areata (patchy hair loss), and there isn't enough reliable research yet to say one way or the other. If hair loss is a concern, talk with your doctor about what might be causing it and what options you have.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Biotin is rated likely safe during pregnancy and lactation. That said, before taking any supplement at this dose, check with your doctor or midwife to make sure it fits your personal health plan.
What does biotin actually do in my body?
Biotin is a B vitamin that helps your body convert food into energy and supports the health of your skin, hair, and nails. Most people get enough from food, but if you're deficient, a supplement can help.
Are there any side effects I should know about?
At this dose (5,000 mcg), side effects are rare. Very high doses — around 300 mg daily — have occasionally caused mild diarrhea in a small number of people. One isolated case involved inflammation around the heart and lungs, but it's unclear whether biotin was responsible.
Can I take this with my other vitamins and supplements?
We have no documented interactions between biotin and other medications or supplements in our data. Still, mention this product to your pharmacist when you pick up your prescriptions or ask about your supplement routine.
