What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: biotin 10,000 mcg per capsule. Biotin is a B vitamin your body uses to help convert food into energy and maintain healthy hair, skin, and nails.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients (rice powder, microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide) that serve as fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Biotin is likely effective for treating biotin deficiency — a real but uncommon condition. For other uses, the evidence is less clear.
It's been rated possibly ineffective for multiple sclerosis and seborrheic dermatitis (a scaly scalp condition), and we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate it for alopecia areata (patchy hair loss). Most people taking biotin for hair, skin, or nails do so based on limited evidence rather than strong clinical proof.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because your body eliminates excess amounts through urine. High-dose biotin has rarely been linked to mild diarrhea — a small number of trial participants reported this at very high doses.
One isolated case report described a serious reaction (eosinophilic pleuropericarditis) in an older woman taking biotin along with other supplements and medications, but whether biotin caused it remains unclear, and no similar cases have been reported since. The safety data advises checking with your doctor before taking high-dose biotin supplements.
