Calm Down Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Calm Down against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Calm Down by Ecological Formulas
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Calm Down has three active ingredients. L-Theanine is an amino acid that may support cognitive function, though the evidence for anxiety or age-related mental decline is still being studied.
L-Taurine is another amino acid with some evidence for congestive heart failure and hepatitis, and is generally well tolerated when used short-term. Gamma-aminobutyric Acid (GABA) is a natural brain chemical thought to have calming effects, but reliable evidence for anxiety or other uses is not yet established.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients—cellulose, silica, stearic acid, gelatin, and purified water—which are standard fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
L-Theanine shows possibly effective evidence for cognitive function, but evidence for anxiety disorders, age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, OCD, and cancer is insufficient. L-Taurine is possibly effective for congestive heart failure and hepatitis, and possibly ineffective for obesity.
GABA's evidence for anxiety, ADHD, athletic performance, cerebral palsy, and chronic bronchitis is insufficient—so we don't yet know if it works for the conditions this product may be marketed for. The bottom line: the calming effect you're hoping for isn't established in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Theanine is generally well tolerated short-term in healthy adults, though long-term safety hasn't been well studied. Reported adverse effects include headaches, drowsiness, and increased dream activity; a single case of facial tics in a child was reported but not confirmed to be theanine's fault.
L-Taurine is generally well tolerated for up to one year at typical doses, with the most common side effects being constipation, diarrhea, and indigestion. Rare serious adverse effects include allergic reactions in people sensitive to sulfites or sulfur compounds.
GABA appears generally well tolerated, with reported side effects including drowsiness, nausea, muscle weakness, and mild throat irritation. One person taking GABA with another supplement reported a temporary loss of menstrual periods.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Double-check blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs) before taking this product—all three ingredients may lower blood pressure further. If you take lithium for bipolar disorder, run that by your pharmacist too.
Also watch for any CNS depressants like benzodiazepines, sleep aids, or opioids, which could add to drowsiness.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Calm Down may appeal to anyone looking for a natural way to support relaxation, but the evidence that it actually works for anxiety is not yet established. If you take blood pressure medication or lithium, you'll want to check your specific drugs with the tool below before starting.
Talk with your pharmacist, especially if you take other sedating medications or have a history of allergies to sulfonamides or sulfites.

Calm Down by Ecological Formulas Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Calm Down by Ecological Formulas contains three active ingredients that together interact with a substantial number of medications.
The most serious concern is with blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs): all three ingredients—L-Theanine, L-Taurine, and GABA—can lower blood pressure on their own, and combining them with prescription blood pressure drugs could cause your pressure to drop too far.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-Taurine also interacts with lithium, a mood-stabilizer medication used for bipolar disorder. Taurine may reduce how your body clears lithium, potentially raising it to unsafe levels.
Both L-Theanine and GABA can add to the sedative effects of CNS depressants (drugs like benzodiazepines, sleep aids, and opioids), though it's unclear how strong this effect is in practice. L-Theanine may also affect how your brain handles serotonin, though no serotonin syndrome cases have been reported with it.
Altogether, these interactions span 563 individual medications. Before you start Calm Down, run your exact prescriptions—especially blood pressure drugs and lithium—through the interaction checker on this page.

For each ingredient in Calm Down with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
Gamma Amino Butyric Acid
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking GABA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Some clinical research shows that GABA can decrease blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, GABA might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Endogenous GABA has well-established relaxant effects and GABA(A) receptors have an established physiological role in sleep. However, the effects of GABA supplements are unclear, as it is unknown whether exogenous GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier. Although there have been limited reports of drowsiness or tiredness with GABA supplements, these effects have not been widely reported in clinical studies. Additionally, intravenous GABA 0.1-1 mg/kg has been shown to induce anxiety in a dose-dependent manner.
L-Taurine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taurine might increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs.
Some clinical evidence suggests that taurine can reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
Lithium
Theoretically, taurine might reduce excretion and increase plasma levels of lithium.
Taurine is thought to have diuretic properties, which might reduce the excretion of lithium.
