Atropine, meperidine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Theanine interacts with.

Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.

Meperidine (often known by the older brand Demerol) is an opioid pain reliever, and it can already make you feel sleepy, foggy, or relaxed on its own. The thinking here is that theanine, the calming amino acid from tea, may gently nudge the same calming brain chemicals like GABA. So in theory, stacking the two could add up to a bit more drowsiness than either one alone.

I want to be honest about how soft this concern is. It is theoretical, based on how these things work rather than real cases, and most people tolerate theanine well. Still, if you notice extra sleepiness, slowed thinking, or grogginess, take it easy and mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.

Here's the honest picture on combining L-theanine with meperidine (often known as Demerol). Meperidine is a bit unusual among opioids because, in addition to relieving pain, it has some serotonin activity. Theanine may gently nudge serotonin in the brain, so on paper there's a theoretical worry about adding two things that touch serotonin together.

In real life, though, this is rated as a minor and unlikely concern. The research on theanine and serotonin is mixed, with some studies showing a rise and others a drop, and there are no actual reports of theanine triggering serotonin syndrome. So I wouldn't lose sleep over a cup of tea or a typical theanine supplement. Still, since meperidine carries its own serotonin risk, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.
