Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.

Here's the basic idea with nifedipine and theanine. Nifedipine already lowers your blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels. Some early lab and animal studies hint that theanine may nudge blood pressure down a little too. If both work in the same direction, your blood pressure could in theory dip lower than expected, which might leave you feeling lightheaded, dizzy, flushed, or tired, especially when you stand up quickly.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this comes from animal and test-tube research, not solid human studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. The calming tea-amount of theanine is unlikely to matter much. If you want to try a concentrated supplement, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings.

What Is Nifedipine Used For?

Brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, Nifed, Procardia, Adalat XL, Adalat CC, Adalat LA, Adalat Retard, Adipine MR, Adipine XL, Cardilate MR, Coracten SR, Coracten XL, Fortipine LA 40, Hypolar Retard 20, Nifedipress MR, Nifopress Retard, Tensipine MR

Nifedipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic stable angina (chest pain brought on by physical effort), and vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by spasm of the coronary arteries, sometimes called Prinzmetal's angina). Lowering blood pressure with nifedipine helps reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

The capsule form is approved for vasospastic angina and chronic stable angina only — it is not approved for high blood pressure. The extended-release tablet (including Procardia) covers all three uses: vasospastic angina, chronic stable angina, and high blood pressure.
