Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.

Here's the simple version: hydrochlorothiazide is a water pill that lowers your blood pressure by helping your body shed extra salt and fluid. Theanine, the calming amino acid from tea, may have a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own. Put the two together and, in theory, your blood pressure could dip a little lower than expected.

I want to be honest about how shaky this evidence is. The concern comes from animal studies only, not from people, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. If you do combine them, just keep an eye out for signs your pressure has dropped too far, like dizziness, lightheadedness when you stand up, or feeling unusually tired. Mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before starting theanine so they can keep tabs on your numbers.

What Is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Esidrix, Hydro, Microzide, HydroDiuril, Hydro-D, Oretic, Aquazide H, Aquazide, HCTZ

Hydrochlorothiazide treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats edema (fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis (liver scarring), and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome. Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are additionally indicated for edema caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy, and edema from acute glomerulonephritis or chronic renal failure. Inzirqo (the oral suspension) is specifically approved for both hypertension and edema in adult and pediatric patients.
