Selegiline falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Theanine interacts with.

Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.

Here's the gist with selegiline: at the doses used for Parkinson's it mainly blocks MAO-B, but it does have some effect on serotonin, especially at higher doses. The theory is that combining it with anything that nudges serotonin upward could, in rare cases, push serotonin too high (think agitation, sweating, fast heartbeat, shivering, or confusion). Theanine is the supplement in question here, and the research on whether it raises or lowers serotonin is genuinely mixed.

The good news is that this is rated a minor and unlikely interaction with weak evidence, and there are no actual reports of theanine triggering serotonin problems. Still, since selegiline already comes with serotonin warnings, I'd run any new theanine supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first rather than starting it on your own.

Selegiline is used as an add-on treatment for people with Parkinson's disease who are already taking levodopa/carbidopa but are finding that the medication's effects are wearing off or becoming less reliable. It is not used alone — it only works as part of a combination approach.

In clinical studies, adding selegiline helped reduce the amount of daily levodopa needed, cut down on "off" time (periods when symptoms break through), and improved things like tremor, speech, movement, and overall daily function.
